I hope this is the correct place to post to request an ID - I am very new to Dipterists' Forum.  I found a very distinctive small black fly today - red eyes and halters, wing venation reminding me of Lauxiniidae - and have posted it for ID on one of the Facebook groups.  It has been suggested that it is most likely to be one of the Platypezidae, the fly's distinctive appearance seeming to suggest Callomyia elegans as a possibility.  Looking at the NBN atlas, however, there is only one record of that species here in the UK, the fly being on the Red List.  Is it possi

Hybomitra

Can anyone help with this Hybomitra from Rye Harbour NR, East Sussex on 13th July? It appears to run through to muhlfeldi but I am not familiar with this species so any pointers would be appreciated

Lovely Eyes

I found this at Dancers End near Tring, I am not sure at all which group this belongs to but suspect the eyes are distinctive enough to point to an ID.

The fly was small max 8mm, habitat tall grassland including hogweed and marjorum, on chalk.

Would be grateful for any pointers.

Second poor photo only to show general body shape.
