General news and comments about true flies (Diptera) and the Dipterists Forum

Photo uploads

Apologies that in recent months the photo upload process was not working as it should have done. The process has now been updated, and there is some revised guidance on the Forums help page.

Hopefully that will enable you to add photos more easily but let me know if there are any problems.

Ongoing problem with uploading photos

Can someone assist, please?

Despite following all of the instructions (and getting a second opinion!),  I cannot upload photos, despite resizing the images. The thumbnails appear in the  ' image' section and I press 'save' but the images don't appear.

I would be grateful for any help.  Thank you.

diptera paper

Hello, I found a 1960 paper by Ted Pelham-Clinton online, ‘A Taxonomic Review of the British Species of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera, Ceratopogonidæ)’. It has restricted access.

Chironomids

Submitted by Ray Morris on

Recently I have been sent a picture of what may be  Demeijerea rufipes but I have no experience (or indeed interest) of this family.  It seems that there is a two-volume key to British male adults.

Is the Chironomidae Study Group still in existence and if so who is the contact?

Many thanks for any help!

Marking flies

Hello,

Anyone with experience marking individual flies for observational studies in the lab; what sort of paint etc. do you use/would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

conops flavipes scotland

Submitted by edinSTH on

hello. I found Conops flavipes last week in East Lothian, Scotland. There is one other record (from the same area in 2022) in iNaturalist but

Scottish records may be missing from NBN ? Does anyone know if there are any other records or if flavipes is moving north?

Quadrifasciatus is fairly common.  Thanks, David

Diptera attracted to Dracunculus vulgaris

Submitted by sifolinia on

Hi,

Does anyone have a copy of Blackith, R. and R. Blackith 1993. Diptera (Insecta) attracted to the Dragon's mouth lily (Dracunculus vulgaris Schott) in Ireland. Bulletin of the Irish biogeographical Society 16: 2-7?

I'm putting together a similar article, covering insects attracted to and trapped by this species in Wales. The Blackith and Blackith paper seems very relevant, but doesn't seem to be available online. I'd like to at least get some idea of the content of the paper before buying a back issue of the bulletin.

Thanks,

Mike

possible Liancalus virens

Submitted by edinSTH on

I found what looks like the Dolichopodid L. virens but seems odd from an Edinburgh garden, although the cross vein m-cu seems to be in the right place

and the fly was about 5-6mm. Photos from 28th April. If anyone can clarify for me that would be great, thanks, David
