Thanks Tony - excellent!

These were sent to me for identification recently. I would much appreciate any help please.

Hi Martin again

No issue now.  Like you, I can see all posts in the thread whether Logged in or out.

The green-eyed one looks superficially like Chyromyidae, but there are no preapical bristles on the tibiae in that family, so I would suggest this is Lauxaniidae.

The other one is one of the "other" Scathophaga. There are keys available to both of these families.

Many thanks Tony

I've slightly ripped it apart beyond repair Pete but many thanks for the offer.

Thanks Tony,

I've keyed the Lauxaniid to Minettia sp. which is as far as British keys go.

This is Urytalpa dorsalis (= Orfelia (subgenus Urytalpa) ochracea in the 1980 handbook) which is widespread throughout Britain to the north of Sutherland (Invernaver) but is new to Orkney. Could I please have the grid reference.

Yes, it is Dolichopus, and could well be ungulatus (yellow femora, lower postocular cilia black, middle tibia with two or more bristles beneath, more than 2 preapicals on hind femora)

Thanks very much Peter. Grid Reference is ND467954. Feeding on Cow Parsley.

It is indeed Pegomya cunicularia, the tufts of setae at the base of the 5th sternite ae characteristic.

Thanks Michael

Looks OK for Macropelopia nebulosa female (Chironomidae)

Many thanks Tony!

The colouring is reminiscent of Gaurax fascipes (one of the yellow and black oscinellines), but I'm not very familiar with this species, so best to wait until the Ismays comment.

Maybe look at X pedisequum too as the markings look bright yellow rather than the primrose yellow of X citrofasciatum?  I've seen both species and the colour difference is distinct.

Sue

I may have a few you can choose from, common or rare or both?

Sue

Physiphora alceae (Ulidiidae)

Thank you that's brilliant I will look it up so i know it next time.
