Might this hoverfly be a Chequered Hoverfly - Melanostoma scalare?

Might this hoverfly (same in both photographs) be Eristalis horticola?

Can any one identify this? Seen on an ornamental pond, motionless too far away and then it vanished. I thought it was a dolichopod but can't find a match. I have this down as the second most mindless killer.

This tiny fly from the recent FSC DIptera families course looks like a candidate for Forcipomyia bipunctata, based purely on overall appearance. Are there any similar species?
