The anal vein appears to reach the wing edge, there are crossed bristles on the frons, and the wings are (nearly) fully-folded - all adds up to Anthomyiidae. Possibly
Hylemya, but I often have difficulty getting these females to genus!
Thanks Tony,
I thought it was probably an Anthomyid but I couldn't make out vein 6 with my old eyes!
This looks OK for Miltogramma germari. (Note the spelling - Meigen named the species after his chum Ernst Germar.) Megachile species are recorded as hosts for this species. Do pop the record on iRecord, or submit it directly to the Sarcophagid recording scheme - that way we'll find out if we have the identification correct!
Thank you very much indeed. They are smart looking flies indeed and I think this one had caught a prey although I can't work out what kind of prey....
Again thank you for the useful information Tony. I will put it on iRecord and will let you know once they have confirmed.
Sorry Chris, didn't see your reply, but yes, I'm always happy to see Hybomitra, the more the merrier!
Hi Phil, since you've posted here you must be logged in, and that should enable you to post in either of the forums. If you're still having problems can you let us know where it is that it goes wrong?
Sorry Antony, I can't make out any detail in those photos. Are you able to upload some larger/higher resolution ones?
I would agree with that Carol. Looks like it is sitting on a Heath Snail, Helicella itala!
I logged in and cannot see your page in the Resources - DF Membership area either John.
Thanks Martin, have just uploaded these at a higher resolution, hopefully they are better! The hypopleuron has no row of bristles and vein 6 does not reach the wing margin, which rules out the other Calyptrata in Fonseca, the sub family key then takes you to Fanniidae via the bare Pteropleuron, followed by the dorsal bristle in line with the dorsal preapicle, unless I am misinterpreting the position of these bristles!
This looks to me more like a Hebecnema (Muscidae). I'm as sure as I can be from these pictures that it isn't Piezura.
Hi everyone, just joined the DF and paid my subscription. I wanted to post a photo of some Milichiidae in the hope of getting advice on id, but I get a message saying I am not allowed to post. Any ideas where I am going wrong? Thanks Phil
