To help celebrate Year of the Fly Dipterists Forum has organised a series of "fly of the month" posts, hosted by Discover Wildlife, the website from BBC Wildlife magazine. The series has started with winter gnats (family Trichoceridae), small flies that dance in the sunshine on bright winter days.
In the post, Erica McAlister writes that "flies aren’t just harbingers of doom or individuals of dubious personal habits, but instead some of the most ecological important, diverse and attractive species of animal on the planet".
