Description

UK BIOSCAN "Taxonomython" Workshop: Call for Taxonomic Expertise

Help Bridge Taxonomy and DNA Barcodes: 23-25 September 2025

The Sanger BIOSCAN team invites members of the Dipterists Forum to join our upcoming "Taxonomython" workshop. This collaborative event aims to improve species identification within the UK BIOSCAN project and the BOLD DNA barcode reference library for UK species.

The Challenge

Thousands of specimens have been collected from across the UK by Malaise trap, and many of our DNA-barcoded specimens remain:

● Without genus or species-level identification

● In need of verification (particularly non-UK species assignments)

How You Can Help

Your expertise in Diptera identification is invaluable. By examining specimens and providing taxonomic determinations, you'll directly enhance our understanding of UK biodiversity while improving the global barcode reference library.

What to Expect

While focusing primarily on Diptera, we welcome experts in any taxonomic group represented in our collections. Prior to the workshop, you'll receive:

● Custom data reports for your taxonomic group

● Access to specimen images (if available)

● Tailored data exports based on your interests

During the three-day workshop, you'll be able to examine specimens, collaborate with specialists, and contribute identifications directly to the BOLD database.

Preparation Details

All specimens were collected in 100% ethanol, DNA extracted non-destructively, and are now stored in 80% ethanol. We understand that some groups require special preparation techniques, and we're happy to discuss loan arrangements where appropriate.
